Player Shortages

Squad Sizes

Squad size is a balance. Why?

  • If the squad is too big it means players don’t get enough game time.  It’s also more difficult for coaches comply with the club’s Equal Game Time policy.
  • If the squad is too small it means the team is likely to run short of players in the second half of the season. Particularly when matches are scheduled on school holidays, the weather is bad, players are injured/sick, families are away, etc.
  • Teams who start the season with less than the recommended squad size will almost certainly be starting some matches short or with no subs.

How to Borrow Players

All Team Official link

Glen Eira FC teams who are short of players for an upcoming match, may seek to borrow players from other Glen Eira FC teams.  A player’s Club Membership Fee doesn’t tie them to a particular team.

Procedure

  1. From your My Details page, click on the All Team Officials link to find the contact details of coaches and/or team managers of other teams.  Only Team Officials can see the contact details of other Team Officials.
  2. Message the Team Officials of other teams in your age group, or below, to ask if any of their players would be interested to fill-in for your match (provide your match details).
  3. The coach and the family both have to provide consent for it to go ahead.   Occasionally, consent won't be provided. Particularly if they have their own match which starts after yours and they want their players to be fresh.

Restrictions for U8-U11 Teams

There are no competition restrictions on the movement of players between U8-U11 teams.

Restrictions for U12-U21 Teams

To be eligible to play for an U12-U21 team, the borrowed player must come from:

  1. a team in a lower age group
  2. a team in a lower league in your age group
  3. a team in the same or higher league in your age group, as long as they aren't yet team-tied*.

*Team-tied means once a player has played^ 5 or more matches at a given grade, Eg 15B, then they can't play in a lower grade, Eg. 15C.

^Played means they were named on the team sheet.

NOTE 1: U11 Players being borrowed by U12 teams must have their photo on their Player ID card.

NOTE 2: Section 10.1.13 of the Competition Regulations states

“For all Junior competitions, a player who has played at a higher division in a particular age group (e.g. 14As) for five (5) Competition Fixtures or more, cannot drop to a lower category (e.g. 14Bs) within the same age group for his or her Club for the remainder of the Regular Season (including Finals). This Regulation does not, however, prevent a player who is playing ‘up’ an age group returning to his rightful age group in accordance with Regulation 10.1.12.”
