Budding Referees
Aims of the Program
- To contribute to the development of the game by introducing the next generation to the benefits of refereeing.
- To contribute to the running of Glen Eira FC home matches for parents and players by removing the requirement for parents to referee their own kids matches.
Take it seriously. This is a job
- You are expected to attend all rostered times.
- If you have a problem with your roster you would need to advise the Budding Refs Coordinator.
- Be confidence & committed
- Pride in your appearance & performance
- Progression from BR4 to BR1
Uniform
- Yellow top & blacks shorts & socks are compulsory.
- Predominantly black sport shoes
- Professional appearance.
Support
- If you have difficulty with spectators, coaches or players, speak to the Ground Marshal who is there to support you.

Eligibility
- You need to be at least 12 years old
- You don’t need to be a member of Glen Eira FC
- Applications are welcomed from girls and boys
Numbers are Capped
The number of Budding Refs in the program is capped at 150% of the available jobs. This ensures that the Budding Refs get enough experience to improve their skills and we have sufficient number of referees when numbers are down.Loading Availability
Budding Ref Availability
- During the season, the Home Match Schedule for the coming weekend is uploaded by the Tuesday prior.
- Budding Refs must submit the Budding Ref Availability Form by 6pm on the Tuesday prior to the weekend's matches
- By 6pm on Thursdays, Budding Referees will be notified which match they've been appointed to.
Training
Budding Refs Courses
To support our Budding Refs and consolidate and enhance their knowledge and refereeing skills, the club provides free training courses at the start of the season for members of the Budding Referees program.
Glen Eira FC’s Referee Coaches will assist budding refs with instant feedback on their performance at matches.
Induction Courses
The training courses are an important and essential component for the development of a Budding Referee.

Attendance
There's a lot of material to take in.
Attendance for at least one induction session for new Budding Referees is compulsory. Those who do not attend will not be appointed to referee matches.
- It is highly recommended that all BR's from 2025 attend at least one session. There have been a number of changes since the 2025 season, including both laws of the game, and administration of the BR Program as a whole.
- For those who were appointed predominantly to U8/9 fixtures in 2025, please attend both sessions.
We will confirm the date for a third and final induction session shortly. It may be after the season has commenced.
